East Kite Beach is a launch spot on the east shore of Keho Lake, Alberta's most popular kitesurfing lake. This prairie irrigation reservoir sits at 963 m altitude in southern Alberta.
The east shore receives the dominant Chinook winds (west/southwest) as side-onshore, offering safe conditions with wind pushing back toward the beach. Excellent for intermediate kitesurfers. The fetch from the west shore generates good chop. Season from May to October.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Shallow reservoir (2-5 m). Warm fresh water (18-22°C in summer). Muddy bottom. Moderate to sustained chop with Chinook winds. The east shore benefits from the full west fetch. Variable water level — check before traveling. Spacious sailing area.
Powerful Chinook winds (30-45 knots common) with gusts. Shallow bottom — fins vulnerable. Sudden prairie lightning and thunderstorms. No natural shelter. Water level can drop significantly in late summer.
