Spot de comox spit

comox spit

comox spit

Overview

Comox Spit (also known as Goose Spit) is the most renowned watersports spot in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island's east coast. The long sand spit forms a protected lagoon ideal for flat water riding, while the outer side offers more challenging conditions in the Strait of Georgia.

Unlike most BC spots, Comox is a "four-season" spot: Pacific storms push powerful winds through the Strait of Georgia, funneled by the island's mountains, offering epic conditions from fall through spring. It's a premier destination for kitesurfing, wingfoiling, and windsurfing on Vancouver Island.

Spot functioning

The lagoon works with SE wind and a 3m+ tide. At low tide, the lagoon partially dries out. Check tide tables before every session. The outer side of the Spit works with more wind directions but is more exposed. Best sessions are during fall and winter frontal passages with high tides.

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Open year-round. Best season: October to April (Pacific storms). Summer is calmer but NW sessions are possible. No known seasonal restrictions. HMCS Quadra military base operates in summer — check accessible zones.

Required level

Intermediate

On the water

Two distinct water bodies: the inner lagoon offers perfect flat water for freestyle and tricks, while the outer side (Strait of Georgia) has chop and waves. Sandy bottom. Georgia Strait water is cold: 4/3 wetsuit in summer, 5/4 with accessories in winter. The lagoon works best with a 3m+ tide and SE wind.

Parking

Parking at Goose Spit Regional Park, at the end of Hawkins Road in Comox. Free parking. Short walk to the launch beach. Washrooms available at the park. The town of Comox is minutes away with all services.

Wind specificities

Prevailing wind is SE, generated by Pacific storms that funnel up the Strait of Georgia and are channeled by Vancouver Island's mountains. Unlike Squamish (summer thermal), Comox is best from fall through spring during storm season. The lagoon works with SE wind. The outer side can work with NW in summer. Typical strength: 15-30 knots during storms.

Hazards

SE wind blows offshore from the Spit toward the open Strait of Georgia — riders must be able to ride upwind. Tidal currents around the tip of the Spit. The spot is on HMCS Quadra military cadet base territory in summer — respect marked zones. Marine traffic in the strait. Cold water: hypothermia risk especially in winter.
