The Südstrand / Watt zone of Wangerooge is the island's flat water area on the Wadden Sea side. Sandy bottom (unlike most Watt spots which have muddy bottoms) — very pleasant sailing. Standing-depth water almost everywhere at high tide. Protected by the island's configuration and the Landzunge of the Westanleger — generally very flat conditions. Important: kitesurfing is generally prohibited on the Watt side. The Windsurfing Wangerooge surf school has an exclusive kite school zone to the west of the island, accessible only as part of lessons (about 10 min by bike). Free practice at the Südstrand: windsurf and wingsurf only. Kiteable: 2-3h before and after high tide.

Access from the surf school (Nordstrand): 10 min on foot with surfwagen or by bike. Windsurf: free outside NLpark protection zones. Kite: supervised lessons only in the school zone to the west (contact surf school). Check tide times — 2 to 3h before and after HW. Sandy bottom (no mud). In N wind: perfectly flat water (Speedfreaks Paradise). In S wind: small jump ramps near the Schiffsanleger (west). All wind directions usable for windsurf.
Windsurf: authorized outside NordSBefV protection zones, approximately 3h before/after high tide. Kite: prohibited for free access on the Watt side — only in the exclusive western school zone (surf school lessons, 2-2.5h before/after low tide).
Beginner
All directions rideable for windsurf thanks to the island's protection. N/NNW = perfectly smooth water, speed conditions. S = small ramps near the Schiffsanleger. E = guaranteed flat water. In strong wind: water choppier but still flat compared to the Nordstrand. Western kite school zone: best in ENE/E/SE wind (free wind from the mainland, flat water).
Kite prohibited on the Wadden Sea side (Südstrand / south zone) — windsurf only outside protection zones. The kite zone is reserved for the Wangerooge surf school (lessons only, no free kiting). Do not kite in the Watt outside the official school zone. Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer: seal and bird protection zones — strict mandatory distances. Water recedes at low tide — plan tide times accordingly.
