Spot de spiekeroog

spiekeroog

spiekeroog

Overview

Spiekeroog is a car-free island between Langeoog and Wangerooge, accessible by ferry from Neuharlingersiel (50 min). Transport on the island: bike, on foot or bollerwagen (cart rented everywhere on the island). Spot ~800m from the village — take a bollerwagen for the equipment. The main spot is the Westend (official name on maps: Sturmeck), at the western tip of the island, directly in front of the legendary Old Laramie bar. A large sandbank protects the coast and creates a flat water lagoon at high tide — which can exceed 1 km wide depending on tide and current configuration. Behind (open sea side), three successive sandbanks generate progressive swell: small waves after the 1st sandbank, larger waves in open sea, mast-high possible in strong W/NW offshore. Particularity: the sandbank has moved closer to shore in recent years — the lagoon is smaller than before, but the long runs (>2km) between the Hessenwand to the SW and the main beach remain legendary at HW. At high HW, you can also cross the sandbank to reach the waves directly. Insider verdict: "one of the most beautiful spots in Europe" (spotnetz.de).

Spot functioning

Ferry from Neuharlingersiel (~50 min) — car left on the mainland. On the island: on foot or by bike, 800m from the village. Rent a bollerwagen to carry equipment. Kiteschule Old Laramie / Kitersclub Spiekeroog directly at the spot. Rideable 2-3h around HW — check tide times imperative. In NE: go to Hundestrand (north side of island). Spot rideable in all directions except NE — in that case, walk to the Hundestrand (north coast). Camping possible in the Süderdünen (western tip).

Wind specificities

W dominant and best: side-onshore left, constant wind, waves organized by the sandbanks. NW: most beautiful and highest waves (mast-high possible offshore). E/SE: flat water in the lagoon, few waves. NNE: go to Hundestrand on the north side — only direction that doesn't work at the Westend. SW/S: depression wind, powerful. The channel between the last sandbank and the shore can form a speed canal 2-3h at low tide depending on configuration. Uncrowded spot: lots of space, few people.

Hazards

Very tide-dependent spot — at low tide, the water is too far to practice. Rideable only around high tide (2-3h before/after HW). The sandbank has gradually moved closer to shore in recent years: less lagoon, spot now kiteable mainly just before/after HW. In case of board loss, long difficult recovery. Few kiters on site = slow rescue. NW wind: favorable but significant waves on the open sea side (beyond the 3rd sandbank). NE: go to Hundestrand to the north. North side beyond sandbank: mast-high possible in strong W/NW. Allow rigging space — narrow beach at this point (respect others).
