Folsom Lake / Granite Bay is a kitesurfing spot located on Folsom Lake, a popular reservoir in the Sierra Nevada foothills, east of Sacramento, California. This man-made lake offers a flat water body ideal for freeriding, with delta thermal winds blowing from the southwest in the late afternoon from May through October. Granite Bay is the most popular launch area for kitesurfing on the lake.
Reservoir lake with flat to slightly choppy water. Freshwater and warm in summer (20-26°C/68-79°F), allowing riding in a shorty or rashguard. Muddy and rocky bottom depending on the area. Lake level varies considerably by season and rainfall. No tides or significant current. Thermal winds arrive in the late afternoon.

Heavy motorboat and jet ski traffic in summer — vigilance required. Variable lake level — submerged tree stumps and rocks when level is low. Extreme summer heat in the foothills (38-42°C/100-108°F) — risk of dehydration and heatstroke. Thermal winds sometimes gusty. State park entry fee required. Busy swimming area at Granite Bay.
