Eagle Lake is a kitesurfing spot located on an alpine lake at 1,558 meters elevation in northeastern California, near Susanville. This isolated natural lake offers a spectacular mountain setting with pine forests and volcanic landscapes. Afternoon thermal winds create riding conditions on a relatively calm water body. The spot is suited for advanced riders due to isolation, cold water, and changing alpine conditions.
Open all year round
Advanced
Alpine lake with cold water (8-18°C/46-64°F depending on season), a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended. Flat to slightly choppy water body with thermal wind. Sandy and rocky bottom. The lake is large (about 10km long) offering plenty of space. High altitude intensifies UV radiation. No tides or ocean currents.
Significant isolation — rescue services far away. Cold water — hypothermia risk, especially in spring and fall. Alpine weather conditions changing rapidly — sudden summer thunderstorms. Thermal winds can be gusty in canyons. Limited cell phone coverage. Altitude (1,558m/5,112ft) increases fatigue and sunburn. Long access road, sometimes snow-covered outside summer season.
