The Januskopf is THE legendary spot of Norderney — meeting point of the island's surf and kite scene, venue of the Deutsche Windsurf Cup. Located at the far east end of Norderney's main promenade, it offers the cleanest and longest waves on the island between the groynes. In strong W/NW wind, the waves between the groynes are exceptional (bottom turns possible). The famous Milchbar (trendy bar) is right next door — unique atmosphere. North side of the island, open North Sea. Intermediate to advanced level. No parking in season — access on foot (500m from parking behind the dike at the Strand-Café at the far east of the promenade).
Surfschule Happy (Yachthafen) — lessons and rental. Surf-Café at the far east end of the promenade — direct view of the spot (ideal for checking conditions).
Access from the far east end of Norderney's promenade (Strand-Café). Parking behind the dike — 500m walk to the spot. Kite zone at Strandaufgang Nordbad (east) to the Weiße Düne. Kite north of the groynes — avoid sharing the entry with windsurfers. Off-season, parking is sometimes directly accessible.
Advanced
W/NW = best (side-onshore from the left, clean waves between the groynes). If NW too onshore, go to the Weiße Düne (same exposure but different angle). E/NE also work — less powerful waves, side-onshore from the right. Mast-high waves possible in sustained strong W/NW (after several days) — quality comparable to northern Denmark or Mukran/Rügen.
Buhnen (groynes) in the water — do not surf between groynes when kiters and windsurfers share the access (space conflicts). No parking at the spot in high season — walking mandatory. North Sea swell can be strong. Kite only outside swimming zones. Tide: conditions best 2h around HW.
