Snowkite spot on Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest lake at 2,285m altitude in the Curecanti National Recreation Area. The vast frozen surface and winds channeled by the Gunnison Canyon make it a premier snowkite spot. Spectacular winter landscape.

Altitude 2,285m — altitude sickness, hypothermia from severe wind chill. Unstable ice in some areas, especially near inflows and the dam. Sudden blizzards with zero visibility. Temperature can drop below -25°C. Isolation — far from help on the frozen surface. Intense UV reflected by snow.

Vast frozen surface in winter with excellent snowkite conditions. Wind-sculpted snowdrifts alternating with bare ice. Check ice thickness — variable by area and season. Powder snow early winter, crusty late season.
