Mission Island Marsh is in Thunder Bay, on the northwest shore of Lake Superior. Thunder Bay is northwestern Ontario's largest city, at the head of Thunder Bay. The spot offers a protected area in the bay with views of the famous Sleeping Giant rock formation. Calmer conditions than the open lake thanks to the bay.
Lake Superior fresh water. Protected area in the bay — flat to choppy. Sand and mud bottom. Cold water (8-16°C even in summer). Limited fetch in the bay but open to the south. Lake Superior warms slowly.

Cold Lake Superior water (full wetsuit required). Marshy area — watch for shallows and aquatic vegetation. Port traffic (Thunder Bay is a major grain port — cargo ships and bulk carriers). Violent storms possible. Currents in the bay.
