Dakhla Lagoon is one of the world's premier kitesurfing destinations, located in the Western Sahara region of southern Morocco. A massive 40+ km lagoon formed by the Dakhla peninsula stretches into the Atlantic, offering pristine turquoise flat water amidst the Saharan desert.
The lagoon offers butter-flat, shallow water with sandbars perfect for beginners (standing depth up to 300m from shore), freestylers, and freeriders. Wind blows nearly 300 days/year from sunrise to sunset, starting around 10am and strengthening through the afternoon. Multiple world-class kite camps line the lagoon.
Key sub-spots within the lagoon: the Main Lagoon (north end, most camps, can be crowded with 300+ kiters), the Speed Spot (further south, butter-flat at low tide), Dune Blanche (13 km downwinder destination, secret bay behind massive white dune), Dragon Island (sand/rock formation, walkable at low tide), Turtle Bay/The Pond (wild southern lagoon, ultra-flat).
The GKA Kite-Surf World Cup is held annually at Oum Lamboiur wave spot on the ocean side. Direct flights from Casablanca (2h20). Kite luggage free on Royal Air Maroc.
ION CLUB Dakhla (2 centers: lagoon + Lassarga), Ocean Vagabond (lagoon + Lassarga), Dakhla Attitude, Dakhla Spirit, Westpoint, Ocean Adventure, Natural Park Resort, Heliophora (El Argoub), La Tour d'Eole, PK25. GKA World Cup venue.
Lagoon: flat to choppy water depending on wind strength. Shallow sandbars for standing. Massive space. Multiple kite camps with schools and rental. Best beginner spot on Earth.
Speed Spot: further south, butter-flat at low tide, offshore wind, freestyle paradise.
