Laboe is the reference kite spot at the entrance to the Kieler Förde, easily accessible from Kiel (~20km). The visual landmark is the Marineehrenmal (72m naval memorial) and the U-995 submarine displayed on the beach. Large flat standing area, sandy bottom, shallow water for hundreds of meters — ideal for progressing. Spot suitable for all levels (beginners welcome) with complete infrastructure: parking, surf school, panoramic view of Kiel Bay. Off-season, uncrowded with great sessions possible in SW/W. Complementary to Dänisch Nienhof and Bülk further north in the Kieler Förde.
Katamarancenter Laboe / Wassersportcenter — kite, windsurf, catamaran lessons. Directly at the spot.
The spot is near the naval memorial. Access via the B502 from Kiel. Rigging on the beach or parking. Kite zone clearly defined — do not kite in swimming zones.
Open all year round
Beginner
Paid parking (~2€) next to the memorial and submarine. Can be packed in high season.
SW/W/NW: best directions (sideshore), typical Baltic flat water. N/NNE/NE: functional, slightly onshore depending on the bay's orientation. E/SE/SSE: offshore from the Förde — unusable and dangerous (carried out to sea). S: sheltered by the coast, unstable wind possible. No significant tides in the Baltic.
Two submerged obstacles (old piles/structures) in the water facing the spot — check their exact position before the session. Naturschutzgebiet zone between the dog beach and Aukrog: kite strictly prohibited (lagoon and beach included). In high season, many swimmers — maintain 2 line lengths distance. Heavy maritime traffic in the Kieler Förde (ferries, cargo ships): never venture towards the main channel. SE wind: risk of being carried towards the fjord entrance.
