Spot de Le Morne | One eye | Oneye

Le Morne | One eye | Oneye

Le Morne | One eye | Oneye

Overview

Expert level wave, powerful, fast, far from shore. If you get caught inside (even when it's small) you are directly slammed onto the reef. Size between 1m and 8m..., ideal wind direction is South, South-East

Access is easier through the Manawa channel, there is also a small channel after Chameau, but you need to be knowledgeable (Mid-tide to high tide).

If surfers are present, do not go on the last section of the wave (Plus very shallow water). Safety provided by the Ion club, 50 euros if they pick you up in the lagoon, 100 euros if they have to rescue you in the waves

Technical details of Le Morne | One eye | Oneye spot

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

One Eye is a world-class reef break that works with south and southwest swells. The wave breaks over a very shallow coral reef, delivering a perfect barrel when conditions align. Best period: May to September (southern winter). Works from mid-tide to high tide — at low tide, the reef is too exposed and dangerous. Ideal size 1 to 3 meters, but can hold up to 8 meters. Access is through the Manawa channel (safest) or the small channel past Chameau (for experienced riders only, mid to high tide only).

On the water

Powerful and fast reef break with hollow, barreling sections. The wave peels right to left over a very shallow coral reef (50 cm to 1.5 m of water). Water is crystal clear and warm (25-28°C). Lateral current can be strong and push toward the reef. Even when small (1-2 m), the wave is already technical. When big, it's one of the most committed spots in the world. Surfers are frequently present: surfers have priority on the last section of the wave (very shallow zone).

Parking

Parking at the foot of Le Morne, on the main Le Morne beach (lagoon side). Access to One Eye is then by kite from the lagoon through the channel, or by boat. There is no direct parking at the spot as it is located on the offshore reef. Schools and clubs (Ion Club, etc.) offer boat shuttles.

Hazards

Very shallow reef, powerful wave, off-shore wind, far from shore. Expert only!

Wind specificities

Cross-offshore wind predominantly from East to South-Southeast. The trade winds are accelerated and channeled by the Le Morne Brabant mountain, creating powerful and consistent conditions. Wind can be enhanced by thermal effect in the afternoon. Warning: the wind blows offshore, making return to shore difficult in case of problems.
