Spot de La Nautique - Kite Spot

La Nautique - Kite Spot

La Nautique - Kite Spot

Overview

La Nautique — Kite Spot, étang de Bages-Sigean near Narbonne. First spot hit by the Tramontane on the lagoon. Exceptional setting: riding facing the beautiful village of Bages perched on its hill, views of the snow-capped Pyrenees in winter and spring.

Vast lagoon (15 km by 4 km) allowing long tacks towards Bages. More adventurous riders can loop around the islands of Planasse and Soulier to the south. Downwind trips possible over several kilometres.

Two distinct spots: above and below the small port of La Nautique. The kite spot (south-east area) is separate from the windsurf spot (Anse des Galères). Intermediate to advanced spot — NOT a beginner spot.

Parc Naturel Régional du Grand Narbonne — protected area. Spot managed by the NautiKite association fighting to keep it open. Respect for wildlife, flora, birds, fishermen's nets and all lagoon users is mandatory.

Technical details of La Nautique - Kite Spot spot

Local association recommendations

NautiKite: association managing the spot. Fighting to keep it open as spots are closing one after another on the lagoon (Anse de Monfort already closed). Membership recommended to support the spot. Safety rules, nature respect and sharing with all users.

Narbonne Kite Passion (NKP): kite/SUP school on étang de Bages. Open April to November 7/7. Beginner courses (2, 3 or 5 × 4h), custom coaching, downwind and kite touring to discover the lagoon. SUP rental and tours. Based at Camping La Nautique.

Pôle Nautique de Narbonne: water sports centre on site. All-level courses in kite, windsurfing, catamaran, foil. Kite simulator. Equipment rental.

Spot functioning

On the water

Lagoon water, shallow. No need for special anti-weed fin (few algae on Bages, except after prolonged SE wind reversals in autumn). In moderate wind: choppy water. In strong wind: nice swell in the middle of the lagoon, significant chop especially on south spot — good jumps possible. Watch for fishing nets — stakes visible and buoys to spot.

Intermediate

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Year-round. Schools open April to November. Camping La Nautique next door (A9 exit 38). Pôle Nautique open in season. Picnic areas, parking, health trail, hiking trailhead. Restaurant nearby.

Spot currently open :-)

Parking

Parking at the water's edge, no space issues. Warning: do not park vehicles too close to the launch zone — dangerous for riders and cars. Access below the A61/A9 junction. 15 minutes from Narbonne, 3 minutes from A9 exit 38. Camping La Nautique nearby.

Hazards

⚠️ NOT a beginner spot! The launch/landing area is very small and upwind of the car park — multiple accidents with beginners crashing into cars. Onshore wind (Tramontane): launching from the beach is dangerous with risk of hitting trees and vehicles.

Tricky water entry: rocks forming a small breakwater at the water's edge. Must navigate between rocks — several people have ended up on the rocks in onshore wind. Need 30+ metres clearance before riding. Sand banks may require even more distance.

Fishing nets numerous near shores and sometimes offshore. Two types: capéchades on wooden stakes (clearly visible) and eel nets on the bottom in fine nylon with small yellow/red buoys (dangerous, sometimes 40 cm underwater). Do not ride over nets — they are fishermen's livelihood.

Hidden rocks under algae at water entry. Water shoes strongly recommended — brick debris and stones. Water sometimes dirty. Broken glass reported at shore.

Regional Natural Park protected area: navigation forbidden within 80 metres of shore. Respect wildlife and flora. Respect all birds. No wild parking.

Wind specificities

Tramontane (NW/NNW): dominant wind, first spot hit on the lagoon — well powered. Onshore wind (blows from lagoon towards beach). Often gusty and irregular, especially the first days. In strong wind, significant chop builds especially on the south spot — nice jumps possible but slalom racing is very rough.

Marin (SE/S): also works well. Different conditions, more regular wind.

For Toulouse riders, this is the closest spot.
