Kahului Harbor is Maui's main commercial port, located in Kahului Bay on the island's north coast. The kite spot is in the harbor area where northeast trade winds blow strongly into the bay. Wind is accelerated by channeling between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala foothills. WARNING: kitesurfing in the harbor area requires extreme vigilance due to commercial traffic — inter-island ferries, cargo barges, and cruise ships transit regularly. Advanced level required to manage maritime traffic and strong wind conditions.
Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and mud in the harbor area. Water can be rough with significant chop in strong winds. Tidal currents in the harbor channel. Wake waves created by vessels. Limited visibility in harbor water. Wind is generally stronger in the bay due to the channeling effect.
