Sykia Beach is a spot at the southeastern tip of the Sithonia peninsula (second "finger" of Chalkidiki), facing the northern Aegean Sea. This advanced position in the sea offers direct exposure to the Meltemi (N/NE) that blows powerfully in summer in this Aegean zone. The south/southwest-facing beach is sheltered from direct Meltemi but captures winds wrapping around the peninsula tip. Wild and preserved setting with crystal-clear waters.
Launch from the south/southwest-facing sandy beach. In deflected Meltemi (NW/NNW), the wind is side-shore to side-onshore — good conditions. In S/SSW wind, onshore conditions. Open sailing area on the Aegean Sea. Caution: the exposed position at the peninsula tip means more committed conditions than inside the gulfs. The current around the tip can be significant.
Moderate to sustained chop depending on wind strength. The open Aegean Sea fetch allows more developed wave formation than inside the gulfs. In strong Meltemi, swell can be significant. Crystal-clear water, among the most beautiful in Greece. Progressive depth from the beach.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access via a dirt track from the south of the Sithonia peninsula. Narrow and rough road — suitable vehicle recommended. Limited parking in natural areas. Wild zone — bring water, food and all necessities. No services nearby.
Exposed position at the peninsula tip — conditions stronger than expected. Significant currents around the tip. Open Aegean fetch — swell possible in strong wind. Very isolated spot — sailing with a buddy mandatory. No mobile coverage in some areas. Rocks on the sides of the beach. No services or rescue nearby.
The tip of Sithonia creates a complex wind regime. The Meltemi (N/NE) wraps around the peninsula and arrives NW/NNW on the southwest coast. The acceleration effect around the tip can increase wind by 15-25%. South/SSW winds rise between Sithonia and Mount Athos in the Singitic Gulf, offering a secondary regime. Thermals are reliable in summer thanks to rapid heating of the narrow peninsula. Exposed position — conditions can be significantly stronger than inside the Chalkidiki gulfs.
