Cape Drepano is a rocky headland on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth, in close proximity to the Faros spot. The cape creates a notable wind acceleration effect, with exposure to easterly (Vardaris) winds channeled through the gulf as well as westerly/southwesterly (Ponentes) winds from the Gulf of Patras. The cape position offers an open sailing area with greater fetch than in the neighbouring bays.
Launch from pebble areas or small beaches around the cape. The spot works mainly in Vardaris (E/ENE) with side-shore to side-onshore conditions depending on exact orientation. In Ponentes (W/SW), the wind arrives more side-offshore from the cape. Open sailing area off the cape with few obstacles. Watch for current which can be noticeable around the headland.
Short to moderate chop in Vardaris, with more developed waves than in protected bays due to the cape exposure. In Ponentes, longer swell from the Gulf of Patras. Deep water near the cape. More committed conditions than on neighbouring beaches, suited to riders seeking wind and chop.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access via a coastal road from neighbouring villages. Parking possible along the road or on natural areas near the cape. Rocky terrain, suitable vehicle recommended for the last stretch.
Submerged rocks around the cape — caution when approaching the shoreline. Notable current around the headland, reinforced in strong wind. Wind accelerated by the cape effect can be surprising. No beach lifeguard. Isolated spot — sailing with a buddy recommended.
Cape Drepano benefits from the dual wind regime typical of the Gulf of Corinth. The Vardaris (E/ENE) is channeled through the gulf corridor and accelerated around the cape, offering powerful and consistent conditions in summer. The Ponentes (W/SW) arrives from the Gulf of Patras, particularly strong during Atlantic low-pressure systems. The cape position creates an acceleration effect of 15-25% compared to protected spots in neighbouring bays. A thermal southerly can also develop in the afternoon during summer.
