Overview

Assateague Ocean is the main ocean-side spot on Assateague Island, accessible from the national park entrance. This east-facing beach offers Atlantic surf and kite conditions on a wild barrier island famous for its wild horses. The spot is more accessible than the OSV zone, with parking and basic facilities at the park. Northeast waves and winds offer excellent kite-surfing conditions. One of the few mid-Atlantic ocean spots with a truly natural setting.

Atlantic Ocean with waves and swell. Good wave conditions in northeast and east swell. Sandy beach with sandbars at low tide. Longshore currents present. Cool water — wetsuit needed except in mid-summer. Sandy bottom. Varied surf conditions depending on swell.

Longshore currents. Nor'easters with strong winds and rough seas. Sharks and jellyfish. Wild horses on the beach — do not approach or feed. Abundant mosquitoes in summer. National park entrance fee. Swimmers in summer. Check kitesurfing restrictions in the park.
