Spot de Kymi

Kymi

Kymi

Overview

Kymi is a spot on the east coast of Evia, directly facing the Aegean Sea. Unlike the west coast protected by the Euboean channel, this eastern facade is fully exposed to the Meltemi which arrives directly from the north and NNE without any obstacle.

It's a character spot, with powerful wind and significant waves in summer. Evia's east coast offers the Meltemi in its full power, comparable to the best Cycladic conditions, but much closer to Athens (2.5 hours by road).

Parking

Parking near Kymi beach. The town of Kymi is perched on a cliff above the port, and the beach is accessible via the road descending to the coast. Parking along the coastal road. Kymi has basic services (restaurants, minimarkets). Ferry from Kymi to Skyros.

Hazards

Powerful waves in strong Meltemi — technical shore break on exit. Coastal currents pushing southward along the coast. Submerged rocks on the sides of the beach. In extreme Meltemi (>30 knots), very committed conditions for experts only. No protected fallback zone in the immediate vicinity — Evia's east coast is exposed and unsheltered.

Wind specificities

The Meltemi arrives directly from N/NNE on this east-facing coast, as powerful side-onshore. No Venturi effect here but pure, direct exposure to the Etesian flow. Typical strength: 15-25 knots, gusting to 30+ knots during strong Meltemi episodes. Wind is more consistent than on the west coast as no mountains disturb the flow before the coastline.

Open fetch to the east/northeast generates significant waves, 0.5-1.5m in moderate Meltemi, exceeding 2m in strong Meltemi.
