Overview

Oak Hammock Marsh is one of North America's most important wetlands, located 30 km north of Winnipeg. This 3,600-hectare Ramsar site is a world-renowned birdwatching centre. The vast expanses of shallow water and adjacent flooded fields offer unique kitesurfing conditions. Note: ecologically sensitive area with strict regulations — verify permissions before riding.

Wetland with very shallow water (often less than 1 m). Muddy bottom and aquatic vegetation. Flat water with no chop. Ideal conditions for learning to kite on ultra-flat water. Unobstructed wind thanks to surrounding flat prairie terrain.

Hazards

Ecologically protected area — strict regulations to respect. Aquatic vegetation that can tangle lines. Very soft muddy bottom. Extremely abundant mosquitoes in summer. Bird sanctuary — do not disturb wildlife, especially during nesting season.
