The Baie du Kernic is a spectacular sheltered bay at the eastern end of the Keremma coastline, near Plouescat. Emerald/turquoise lagoon waters enclosed between the Keremma dunes to the north and sandy shores to the south. The bay empties completely at low tide — ideal for land kite (char à voile), buggies, speedsail — and fills from mid tide to give a beautiful protected flat-water sailing area.
Used as a flat-water refuge when conditions are wild on the exposed coast. AvelWest describes it as the ideal spot when Dossen or the open coast is too big. All wind directions work due to the enclosed bay geometry, though W/NW dominant in practice.
Char à voile base (Club de la Baie du Kernic) — present at low tide. AvelWest teaches in this zone. École Kitesurf Bretagne (ecolekitesurfbretagne.com) uses the Kernic bay.
Access from Plouescat, follow signs for Baie du Kernic / Plage de Porsguen. Multiple access points around the bay perimeter. Works from mid tide to high tide for kite/wingfoil (flat water). At low tide: bay empty — char à voile, buggy, speedsail.
Always flat — enclosed bay, no swell. Sandy bottom, shallow at mid tide. The bay fills from mid tide — navigable from approximately 5m water height. Tidal current at the mouth (north opening) during fill/drain — stay clear. Char à voile and buggies at low tide.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Strong current at the bay mouth (north opening) when the bay fills/drains — respect during strong coefficients. No navigation at the bottom of the bay (Goulven/Kernic reserves — birds). At low tide: char à voile and buggies share the beach. At high tide: bay entrance can produce shorebreak.
All wind directions work in the bay — enclosed geometry offers protection from gusts on most orientations. Best: W/NW for length of runs. Rides well also in NE (favoured spring thermal direction for the whole Keremma zone). In practice, vent enters the bay less effectively at high tide than along the open coast. A good refuge when conditions are gusty or chaotic outside.
