Altona Kite Beach is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in Melbourne, located in the western suburbs on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria. This spot is the heart of Melbourne's kite community, with a dedicated kitesurfing zone and ideal conditions for all levels. The beach is wide and the water shallow, making it an excellent learning spot. The prevailing southerly to southwesterly winds blow onshore to side-onshore on this south-facing beach. Melbourne's famous "Southerly" blows regularly in summer, offering reliable sessions almost every afternoon. The water is flat to slightly choppy, with very shallow areas extending far from shore. It is a prime spot for freestyle and freeride. Altona is easily accessible from central Melbourne. Parking is free and spacious. Many kite schools operate at this spot. Watch out for marked swimming zones and other beach users. The spot can be very crowded on windy summer days.
