Methoni is a spot on the western shore of the Thermaikos Gulf, south of Thessaloniki, in the Pieria region. Facing east, this spot benefits from excellent exposure to the Vardaris (N/NNW), the powerful katabatic wind descending from the Vardar valley. The beach also offers good exposure to SE winds (Ostria) rising up the gulf. Setting with views of Mount Olympus to the southwest and the Chalkidiki coasts to the east.
Launch from the east-facing sand and pebble beach. In Vardaris (N/NNW), the wind is side-shore — riding parallel to the shore. In Ostria (SE), the wind is onshore — more accessible conditions. Open sailing area on the Thermaikos Gulf. The fetch is significant eastward (20+ km) — chop possible in strong SE wind.
In Vardaris (side-shore), moderate chop with limited lateral fetch. In Ostria (SE onshore), more developed chop with 20+ km fetch from the gulf. Generally clean and clear water. Progressive depth from the beach.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access from the Pieria coastal road. Parking along the road or in areas near the beach. Village of Methoni nearby with some services.
Potentially very powerful Vardaris — assess your skills. In strong Ostria, gulf chop can become significant. Possible current along the coast in strong wind. Some rocks along the shoreline. No beach lifeguard.
The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the main wind, arriving from the Vardar valley side-shore to side-onshore on this east-facing coast. Powerful year-round, it is particularly strong in winter and spring. The SE wind (Ostria) rises up the Thermaikos Gulf and arrives onshore, offering a reliable secondary regime in summer. The position on the west coast of the gulf allows receiving both main regimes. Afternoon thermals possible in summer from the NE.
