Spot de Vesterø Havn

Vesterø Havn

Vesterø Havn

Overview

Vesterø Havn on Læsø island is described by VisitDenmark as "a mecca for kitesurfers." The island hosts two nationally famous spots: Stokken (4 km southwest of the harbor) and Flaget (between the harbor and the Nordre Rønner reef). Danish kitesurfer Rasmus Frejlev set a height record of 21.9 meters here.

The island offers unique conditions: ultra-flat, ultra-shallow water and runs spanning several kilometers. The annual Kite Camp Læsø (week 39) attracts over 100 kitesurfers and sells out every year.

Spot functioning

Vesterø Havn harbor is on the southwest coast of Læsø. Stokken works best in south to west winds. Flaget is more versatile. The island's small size allows quick spot changes depending on wind direction. Flat water conditions are present in virtually all conditions.

On the water

Ultra-flat and shallow water. Stokken: channel approximately 2 km long and 100-150 m wide, depth 0-150 cm, no rocks. Flaget: area between the harbor and the reef, depth 20-100 cm, very large flat water surface. Sandy bottom throughout. Incredibly long runs possible - several kilometers. Dream conditions for freestyle and foil.

Parking

Ferry from Frederikshavn to Vesterø Havn (approximately 90-minute crossing). Distances on the island are short - Stokken is 4 km from the harbor. Parking at the harbor and spot access points.

Wind specificities

Best winds: south to west. The island's small size allows finding an onshore spot for most directions. 3,358 kiteable hours/year. The island is well exposed in the Kattegat with no wind obstacles. Windiest months: June (540h), July (536h), May (514h).

Hazards

The Stokken channel is narrow in places (100-150 m) - good kite control is required. Otherwise very safe: no rocks, no currents, ultra-shallow. Cold water - wetsuit required. Remote island: bring spare equipment.
