Apelviken is one of the most famous kitesurfing and windsurfing spots in Sweden, located in Varberg in Halland County on the west coast. This iconic bay is considered the birthplace of windsurfing in Sweden and remains a top destination for board sports on the Scandinavian coast. Apelviken Bay offers an exceptional configuration with a southwest exposure that perfectly captures the prevailing winds of the Kattegat. The semi-sheltered water, protected by rocky headlands on each side of the bay, allows riding in varied conditions: flat water near the shore for beginners and more developed waves further out for experienced riders. In sustained southwest winds, beautiful waves form in the bay, offering wave riding conditions that are rare in Sweden. The infrastructure around the spot is excellent with nearby parking, kite and windsurf schools, as well as shops and restaurants in Varberg. The rider community is very active and welcoming. The spot regularly hosts national and international competitions. The season runs from April to November, with the best conditions in autumn when Atlantic storms generate strong and consistent winds. Apelviken is a must-visit spot for any kitesurfer visiting Sweden.
