Spot de Faros Epanomis

Faros Epanomis

Faros Epanomis

Overview

Faros Epanomis is a spot at the Cape of Epanomi, south of the Thermaikos Gulf, between the Angelohori peninsula and the Chalkidiki coast. This lighthouse (Faros) marks a cape that separates the Thermaikos Gulf from the Gulf of Thessaloniki. The cape position offers exceptional multi-directional exposure, with a wind acceleration effect around the headland. The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the dominant wind, but the cape position also captures south and southwesterly winds.

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Launch from beaches around the cape — choose the side based on wind direction for side-shore or side-onshore conditions. In Vardaris (N/NNW), the southeast beach offers the best conditions. In SE/S wind, the north or northwest beach is more suitable. Open sailing area with good fetch in all directions. The cape offers more committed conditions than the protected neighbouring beaches.

On the water

Moderate to sustained chop depending on wind direction and strength. The significant Thermaikos Gulf fetch (20+ km) allows wave development in strong wind. Around the cape, currents and wave refraction create technical conditions. Clear and deep water near the cape.

Parking

Access from Epanomi via the road leading to the lighthouse. Parking available along the road or in areas near the cape. Semi-isolated area — bring water and provisions.

Hazards

Acceleration effect around the cape — wind stronger than expected. Currents around the cape, reinforced in strong wind. Submerged rocks near the lighthouse and cape. Technical conditions — spot not recommended for beginners in strong wind. Maritime traffic in the gulf. Semi-isolated spot.

Wind specificities

The cape effect creates a 15-25% wind acceleration compared to surrounding spots. The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the dominant wind, arriving powerfully from the Vardar valley. SE and S winds rise up the Thermaikos Gulf and reach the cape with force. SW winds wrap around the peninsula and are accelerated around the cape. This unique position allows riding in almost all wind directions, except direct east (land). Reliable afternoon thermals in summer.
