Spot de Julians Bay

Julians Bay

Julians Bay

Overview

Julians Bay is a spot on the west coast of Kea (Tzia) island, the closest Cycladic island from Athens. This bay faces west/southwest, meaning the dominant Meltemi (N/NNE) arrives here as OFFSHORE — a dangerous orientation for beginners and intermediates.

The spot works mainly with south to west sector winds, more frequent in spring, autumn, and during summer low-pressure passages. Kea is accessible by ferry from Lavrio (1 hour), offering an island escape close to Athens.

Parking

Access via island roads from Korissia port. Limited parking near the bay, on dirt roads or roadside. Kea is a quiet, less touristy island compared to other Cyclades. Limited services — stock up in Ioulida (main village) or Korissia. Ferry from Lavrio (Attica), about 1-hour crossing.

Hazards

🚨 DANGER: Meltemi OFFSHORE on this coast! A rider carried out will be pushed toward the open Saronic Gulf/Aegean Sea with no possibility of return. Rocky coastline with limited access. No rescue services nearby. Rocky bottom with sea urchins. Currents between Kea and the mainland. Remote island with limited rescue resources.

Wind specificities

⚠️ WARNING: The Meltemi (N/NNE), the dominant summer wind, is OFFSHORE on this west coast! It pushes toward the open sea, toward the open Saronic Gulf. Do NOT sail in Meltemi from this coast.

The spot works with S, SW and W winds, which arrive onshore to side-onshore. These conditions are linked to depressions and southerly thermals. More reliable in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In summer, the Meltemi dominates and makes this spot unsailable most of the time.
