Ormos Panagias is a spot on the east coast of the Sithonia peninsula (second "finger" of Chalkidiki), in the northern Aegean Sea. This west/southwest-facing bay offers natural protection from the Meltemi (N/NE) that blows in summer in the northern Aegean. The spot benefits from NW winds wrapping around the peninsula, as well as south/southwesterly winds rising up the Singitic Gulf (between Sithonia and Athos). Magnificent setting with the turquoise waters characteristic of Chalkidiki.
Launch from the bay beach. In NW wind, the wind is side-onshore — good riding conditions in the bay. In S/SSW wind, the wind is side-shore. The bay offers a protected sailing area with limited fetch. Beyond the bay, the Singitic Gulf offers more space and fetch. Caution: conditions can change rapidly when leaving the protected bay.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Flat water in the protected bay. Moderate chop in the open gulf in strong wind. Chalkidiki waters are renowned for their clarity and turquoise colour. Progressive depth in the bay. Pleasant water temperature from June to September.
Access from the main Sithonia road to the village of Ormos Panagias. Parking in the village or in areas near the bay. Tourist area in summer — parking can be difficult in high season.
The Sithonia peninsula creates a complex wind regime. The Meltemi (N/NE) dominant in summer is partially blocked by the peninsula, but wraps around it from the NW to reach the east coast. South/SSW winds rise up the Singitic Gulf (between Sithonia and Mount Athos), offering a reliable secondary regime. The gulf creates a channeling effect that reinforces these southerly winds. Afternoon thermals are generated by differential heating between the peninsula's land and the sea.
Rocks on the sides of the bay — stay in the central area. Changing conditions when leaving the protected bay. Possible current at the bay entrance. Leisure and excursion boats in summer. No specific supervision for water sports.
