Querqueville is located on the north coast of Cotentin, immediately west of Cherbourg, between the sheltered harbour and the open coast. The beach sits near the Fort de Querqueville and benefits from a northward exposure, well-positioned to catch the dominant NW to NE winds sweeping the English Channel.
It differs from Collignon (eastern side of the harbour, protected flat water): here the spot is on the open north face, with more exposure and sometimes waves depending on wind direction. Works from NW to NE. Intermediate level, good for freeride and wingfoil in NW to N winds. Watch for the harbour breakwater nearby. PNH (PĂ´le Nautique de la Hague) school operates in the Cherbourg area.
Pôle Nautique de la Hague (PNH) — the only kitesurf school in Cotentin. Operates at Urville-Nacqueville, Siouville, Vauville and Cherbourg area depending on conditions. Groups of 1-3. April-November. polenautiquehague.com
Intermediate
Open all year round
Cherbourg harbour breakwater nearby — know the water area before navigating. Potentially strong tidal currents depending on coefficient. NE wind often stronger than forecast in the Channel. Not a spot for unsupervised beginners. Offshore winds (S to SE) are dangerous.
Works mainly NW to NE. NW: side-onshore port tack, waves depending on Atlantic swell. N: waves possible, good kitesurfing. NE: accelerated by the Channel corridor, sometimes very strong. West wind: can be disturbed by the Hague headland upwind. S to SE sector winds: offshore — do not practice.
