West Alton Shelter is a kitesurf spot at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, north of St. Louis. This unique spot is located in the floodplain between North America's two largest rivers. Vast flat expanses offering excellent fetch. Winds channeled by the river valley are consistent and sustained. Warning: flood-prone area — check water levels before coming. Season from May to October.
Mississippi/Missouri River freshwater with very limited visibility (turbid water). Water temperature from 0°C in winter to 27°C in summer. Floodplain area with shallow water when accessible. Current possible from rivers. Muddy bottom. Full 4/3 wetsuit in spring/fall, shorty in summer.

Flood-prone area: check river levels before coming. Violent thunderstorms with lightning and tornadoes — exit water immediately. Dangerous river currents. Floating debris (logs, branches). Very turbid water hiding all obstacles. Water moccasin and copperhead snakes. Numerous mosquitoes. Area isolation.
