The Spit is a very popular kitesurfing spot located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, at the northern end of Mooloolaba. It is the sand spit that forms the entrance to the Mooloolah River. It is one of the most frequented spots on the Sunshine Coast thanks to its versatility: flat water on the river side and waves on the ocean side. The prevailing south-east wind (trade winds) blows cross-shore to cross-onshore, offering excellent conditions for all levels. On the river side, the water is flat and shallow, perfect for beginners and freestyle. On the ocean side, waves provide a playground for more experienced riders. Water temperature ranges from 20°C in winter to 27°C in summer. The best season is from October to March, with consistent winds of 15 to 25 knots. The Spit is a very social spot with an active kitesurfing community. Watch out for strong currents at the river entrance, especially during tide changes. The spot can be crowded on good wind days. Parking is available nearby with showers and amenities. It is an essential Sunshine Coast spot, offering one of the best flat water/wave combinations in the region. Kite schools are active here and the atmosphere is friendly.
