Spot de Punta Luna

Punta Luna

Punta Luna

Overview

Before being a kitesurfing spot, Punta Luna is a unique experience. Located in the Illescas National Reserve, access to Punta Luna is strictly limited in terms of number of people and vehicles per day. Access is controlled by rangers, and the road is blocked by a closed gate. It takes about an hour by 4x4 on a challenging track from the main road. You cannot visit this spot spontaneously; it must be organized by the lodge, and you will need to book your room on site. Prices are relatively high, which helps maintain the reserve and limit access.

Accommodation

The Punta Luna lodge is located directly on the beach, in the middle of the reserve. From the lodge, you just need to look up to see rich wildlife including vultures, condors, hawks, pelicans, hummingbirds, foxes, and sea lions. You can walk along the beach and above the cliffs, enjoying a rare setting, far from any civilization. The sunsets are spectacular, and during new moon nights, the starry sky is particularly impressive. https://puntalunasurflodge.com/

Meals

The lodge offers exceptional cuisine, with three cooks who will introduce you to typical Peruvian dishes, prepared with care and taste. The meals are a real delight, and despite the hours spent at the spot, it can be difficult not to gain weight during your stay.

Wind and Wave Conditions

The wind at Punta Luna is mainly side-offshore to offshore. Weather forecasts are not always reliable, so it's better to rely on cloud observation. On clear mornings, the wind is generally stronger and starts earlier, allowing you to ride from 1 PM to 5:30 PM, or even earlier or later depending on conditions. It is recommended to bring a set of kites (7m, 9m, 11m for average builds or 8m, 10m, 12m for larger riders). The ideal period for the wind/wave combo extends from May to the end of October.

Safety and Clinics

Outside of the season and clinics where a jet-ski is available for rescue, it is not recommended to kite alone due to the side-off to offshore wind conditions. Clinics are organized by professionals such as KWC, Martin Vari, Reo Stevens, and Mitu. KWC, run by Swiss Marc Ramseier for over 10 years, is particularly recommended.

Waves

The waves at Punta Luna are powerful, steep, and fast, ideal for experienced kitesurfers. Unlike Pacasmayo, where the waves are gentler, those at Punta Luna are more demanding. The wave breaks along the entire length of the spot and is a left, ideal for goofy riders, but requiring backside mastery for regular riders. It is advisable to start with Pacasmayo before tackling Punta Luna, with some clinics offering a combo of both spots.

In summary, Punta Luna offers a unique kitesurfing experience in a preserved natural setting, with ideal conditions for advanced riders, quality accommodation, and complete immersion in nature.
