Spot de Plaka

Plaka

Plaka

Overview

Plaka is a spot on the northeastern Aegean coast, in the Thrace region, near Alexandroupoli. Facing south towards the Aegean Sea, this spot benefits from direct exposure to the Meltemi (NE/ENE) which is particularly powerful in this eastern part of the northern Aegean. The Etesian (Meltemi) winds are channeled between the Thracian coast and the northeastern Aegean islands (Samothrace, Thasos). The area offers windy and consistent conditions in summer.

Technical details of Plaka spot

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Launch from the south-facing beach. In Meltemi (NE/ENE), the wind is side-shore to side-onshore — excellent riding conditions. In S/SSW wind, onshore conditions. Open sailing area on the northern Aegean Sea with good fetch. View of Samothrace island to the southwest. Less crowded spot than Chalkidiki ones — more riding space.

On the water

Moderate to sustained chop depending on the Meltemi. The open Aegean fetch allows wave development in strong wind. In Meltemi side-shore, chop is moderate. In S onshore wind, more developed swell from the open sea. Clear Aegean Sea water.

Parking

Access from the Thracian coastal road, between Komotini and Alexandroupoli. Parking available along the coastal road or in areas near the beach. Relatively isolated area.

Hazards

Potentially very powerful Meltemi in this eastern Aegean zone — assess your skills carefully. Possible current along the coast in strong wind. Open Aegean fetch — swell in strong wind. Isolated spot — sailing with a buddy recommended. Tidal currents possible near Thracian river mouths.

Wind specificities

The Meltemi (NE/ENE) is the dominant summer wind, channeled between the Thracian coast and the northeastern Aegean islands. In this eastern zone, the Meltemi blows more from NE/ENE than pure N, creating side-shore to side-onshore conditions on this south-facing coast. The wind can be very powerful and consistent from June to September. South/SSW winds bring a secondary regime during low-pressure systems. Thermals reinforced in the afternoon during summer by heating of the Thracian lands.
