Kabouri-Kryoneri is a spot on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth, west of the Rio-Antirrio bridge, in the transition zone between the Gulf of Corinth and the Gulf of Patras. This strategic position offers excellent exposure to westerly/northwesterly winds (Maestro and Ponentes) arriving directly from the Gulf of Patras, as well as easterly (Vardaris) winds channeled through the Gulf of Corinth. The proximity to the Rio-Antirrio strait brings a notable wind acceleration.
Launch from the pebble and sand beach. In westerly/northwesterly wind (Maestro/Ponentes), the wind is onshore to side-onshore — ideal and safe conditions. In Vardaris (E/NE), the wind is side-shore to side-offshore — more technical. Open sailing area with good fetch in both gulf directions. The spot works best in westerly winds which are the most frequent.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Moderate chop in westerly wind with significant fetch from the Gulf of Patras. In Vardaris, shorter chop channeled through the gulf. Relatively flat water in the nearshore area, choppier further out. Good compromise between accessible conditions near the beach and more committed conditions offshore.
Access from the village of Kryoneri via the coastal road. Parking available along the road or in areas near the beach. Relatively easy access.
Prime position in the convergence zone between the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth. The Ponentes (W/SW) arrives directly from the Gulf of Patras with acceleration due to the proximity of the Rio-Antirrio strait. The Maestro (NW) is the dominant summer wind, channeled through the Gulf of Patras. The Vardaris (E/NE) is channeled through the Gulf of Corinth corridor. The area benefits from 15-25% acceleration compared to spots further from the strait. Reliable afternoon thermals in summer.
Wind accelerated by the proximity of the Rio-Antirrio strait — conditions stronger than expected. In Vardaris (E/NE), offshore component — don't venture too far out. Possible current in the transition zone between the two gulfs. Some rocks near the shoreline. Maritime traffic related to the strait — stay in the coastal zone.
