Sunrise Beach is a section of the long Muizenberg/Strandfontein beach, very popular with kitesurfers. Less crowded than Muizenberg Corner, it offers more space and similar conditions: onshore SE wind, sandy bottom, shallow water. It's an excellent spot for beginners and intermediates with plenty of room to ride.
Works in SE, from October to March. Rideable at all tides. Low tide preferred for more beach space. Wind picks up around noon-1pm and holds until sunset. Very suitable for kite lessons thanks to the available space.
Open all year round
Beginner
Small waves on sandy bottom. Shallow water with moderate current. Water at 16-20°C in summer, 3/2 wetsuit sufficient. Gentle conditions, perfect for learning.
Free parking along the coastal road. Less pressure than at Muizenberg. Watch for theft — leave nothing visible in your vehicle.
The SE (Cape Doctor) wind blows onshore from October to March, typically 15-25 knots. Wind is steady and consistent on this section of beach. Less venturi effect than at the Corner, so conditions are gentler and more consistent. Thermal kicks in early afternoon.
Sharks: great white shark area, Shark Spotters on duty. Moderate lateral current in strong SE. Car break-ins. Occasional jellyfish.
