Delta Aksiou is a spot in the Axios (Vardar) river delta, on the western shore of the Thermaikos Gulf, northwest of Thessaloniki. This marshy delta offers shallow areas and flat water ideal for kitesurfing. The spot is exposed to the Vardaris (N/NNW), the katabatic wind descending from the Vardar valley from North Macedonia, one of the most powerful and consistent winds in Northern Greece. A Natura 2000 site, the delta is a protected ecosystem hosting exceptional birdlife.
Launch from sand or firm mud areas at the delta's edge. In Vardaris (N/NNW), the wind is side-shore to side-onshore on the east coast of the delta. The delta shallows offer large flat water areas with shallow depth — ideal conditions for kitesurfing. Watch for impassable marshy zones. The spot works mainly in Vardaris (year-round) and in SE wind during summer.
Very flat water in the delta shallows. Shallow depth (50 cm to 1.5 m) over large areas, allowing standing if needed. In strong wind, light chop in the deeper gulf areas. Brackish water at the river mouth, saltier further into the gulf. Exceptional conditions for freestyle and learning.

Open all year round
Access from roads leading to the delta from Thessaloniki or Chalastra. Parking on dirt tracks at the edge of the delta. Wetland area — don't venture off marked paths. Muddy terrain after rain, suitable vehicle recommended.
Natura 2000 area — respect nesting zones and seasonal restrictions. Soft mud can trap feet in some areas. Potentially extreme Vardaris (40-60 knots) — don't underestimate. Floating debris possible at the river mouth. Murky water making submerged obstacles invisible. Isolated spot — sailing with a buddy recommended.
The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the dominant wind, a katabatic wind descending the Vardar valley from North Macedonia. Extremely powerful in winter and spring, it can blow at 40-60 knots during the strongest episodes. In summer, it is reinforced by the thermal effect of the Thermaikos Gulf. The delta is one of the first obstacles in the Vardaris path, offering laminar and powerful wind. The SE wind (Sirocco/Ostria) is the secondary regime, arriving from the gulf. NE thermals possible in the afternoon during summer.
