Elounda is a kitesurfing spot in the northwestern part of Mirabello Bay, on the northeast coast of Crete. This renowned seaside resort offers a magnificent setting with views of Spinalonga island and its Venetian fortresses.
The Meltemi penetrates the bay from N/NNW, but the protection of the Spinalonga peninsula and coastal terrain partially attenuates the wind. Conditions are accessible to intermediates with relatively flat water in the sheltered area.
Launching from beaches around Elounda. Sailing area in the bay protected by Spinalonga. Watch for maritime traffic (excursion boats to Spinalonga very frequent in summer).
Works from June to September. Foiling (wingfoil, windfoil) is particularly suited on moderate wind days.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Semi-flat water in the area protected by Spinalonga. Light chop. Sandy and rocky bottom. Variable depth. Crystal clear water typical of eastern Crete.
Parking in the Elounda resort area. Numerous tourist facilities (restaurants, hotels, shops). Easy access from Agios Nikolaos (10km).
Meltemi arrives from N/NNW but is partially filtered by the Spinalonga peninsula and coastal terrain. Typical strength 10-20 knots, less strong than open sea. Wind can be irregular with wind shadow zones.
Best conditions in the afternoon when thermal reinforcement adds to the Meltemi. Less reliable for strong wind than Kouremenos but more accessible.
INTENSE maritime traffic in summer (excursion boats to Spinalonga, fishing boats). Respect navigation channels. Designated swimming areas – do not sail in these zones. Rocky bottom in places.
