Antirrio is a spot at the foot of the famous Rio-Antirrio bridge, at the western entrance of the Gulf of Corinth. This narrow passage (about 2 km wide) between the Gulf of Corinth and the Gulf of Patras creates one of the most powerful Venturi effects in all of Greece.
Wind, whether from the E (Gulf of Corinth) or W (Gulf of Patras), is compressed and accelerated through this bottleneck. Conditions can be extreme in strong wind episodes, with gusts exceeding 35 knots. Spot reserved for advanced riders in strong wind.
The spot works year-round but best conditions are May to October. In moderate wind (12-18 knots), accessible conditions. In strong wind (>20 knots), the Venturi creates very powerful conditions, reserved for advanced/expert riders. Watch forecasts — wind can increase very quickly.
Flat water despite strong wind — that's the magic of the narrow Gulf of Corinth! Strong currents in the strait. Rapid depth. Clean water. Temperature: 23-27°C in summer.

Parking along the Antirrio coastal road and in the port area. Ferries crossing the strait (alternative to the toll bridge). Nafpaktos 10 min, Patras 15 min via bridge. All services available in both towns.
🚨 EXTREME currents in the Rio-Antirrio strait. Very dense maritime traffic (ferries every 15 min, cargo ships, cruise ships). DO NOT sail in the shipping channel! Very strong and potentially gusty wind. Direction changes possible. Bridge pillars to be absolutely avoided. Spot reserved for experienced riders who know local conditions.
🔥 MAXIMUM VENTURI EFFECT: The Rio-Antirrio passage (2 km wide) compresses wind by 30-50%. A 15-knot Vardaris in the gulf can become 25 knots at the strait! On strong wind days, gusts of 35-40 knots are possible.
Wind can blow from E/NE (Vardaris, channeled from the Gulf of Corinth) or W/SW (Ponentes, from the Gulf of Patras). Direction can change within hours. The Rio-Antirrio bridge (2883m long) is a spectacular visual landmark.
