Omaha Beach is a popular kitesurfing spot on the east coast, located about an hour north of Auckland in the Matakana region. This long white sand beach facing east offers ideal conditions for beginners and intermediate riders, thanks to its relatively flat and sheltered body of water. The Omaha Estuary, located at the south end of the beach, offers a perfect flat water alternative for learning. The prevailing winds blow from the northeast and east, creating pleasant side-shore to onshore conditions for sailing. Summer thermal breezes strengthen these winds in the afternoon. The best season runs from October to March, when sea breezes are most regular. In winter, southwest winds blow offshore, making sailing more technical and less recommended. Omaha is an upscale seaside resort very popular with Aucklanders, with beautiful holiday homes, restaurants, and a golf course. The beach is patrolled in summer. The estuary is particularly suited for wingfoil and stand-up paddle. The surroundings offer the possibility to visit the Matakana wine region, the Saturday farmers market, and the neighboring beaches of Pakiri and Mangawhai.
