Twenty Five Mile Beach is a unique kitesurf spot located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, about 28 kilometers west of Queenstown along the Glenorchy road, in the Otago region. This alpine spot offers an exceptional kitesurfing experience with the spectacular Remarkables and surrounding mountain ranges as a backdrop. Lake Wakatipu, at 310 meters altitude, is one of the most iconic lakes in New Zealand. Winds on Lake Wakatipu are mainly thermal, generated by differential heating between the mountains and the lake. Prevailing winds come from the northwest and north, channeled by the surrounding mountain valleys. Gusts between 10 and 18 knots are common, with stronger sessions during northwest front passages. Summer afternoons offer the most reliable thermal conditions. However, beware of channeling effects and unpredictable gusts typical of mountain lakes. This spot is for intermediate to advanced kitesurfers due to sometimes irregular winds and gusts. The lake water is cold (glacial origin), requiring a 4/3 or even 5/3 wetsuit depending on the season. The spot offers reasonable launching space on the pebble and sand beach. It is a must-visit for kitesurfers visiting the Queenstown area, combining sailing on crystal-clear freshwater with breathtaking alpine scenery.
