Overview

Wanapum State Park is a kitesurfing spot on the Wanapum Reservoir (Columbia River) in central Washington State, near Vantage. This state park offers access to the vast reservoir surrounded by the spectacular desert landscape of the Columbia Basin. The basalt cliffs of the Vantage Columns overlook the site. Thermal winds channeled through the Columbia Valley provide reliable conditions in summer. Wide body of water with flat water.

Wanapum Reservoir with fresh water. Pleasant temperature in summer (18-23°C/64-73°F). Shorty to 3/2mm wetsuit in summer. Flat water to light chop. No significant current in the reservoir. Sandy to rocky bottom. Vast open body of water.

Hazards

Extreme summer heat in the Columbia Basin desert (40°C/104°F+ possible). Thermal winds can increase with gusts. Remoteness — few services. Dehydration risk. Summer thunderstorms with lightning possible. State park — Discover Pass required. Rattlesnakes on the shores.
