The "74" is the local name for the kite and wingfoil spot at Petit Travers/Carnon, accessed via beach access #74, between Montpellier and Palavas-les-Flots (34). This is the main local riders' spot south of Montpellier, 15 min from the city on the expressway. Parking at beach access 74 with wooden footpath through the dunes. Official kite zone (buoys from Apr 15–Oct 15). Known as the summer foil spot of the Montpellier community. Nearby spots: Plage des Roquilles (forbidden in summer) and Petit Travers. 2m height restriction for vehicle access.
Open all year round
Intermediate
SE to SW is the prime window — onshore/side-on, allowing flat water freestyle or waves depending on strength. Marin (SE/E) gives flat water. SW thermal in summer delivers the legendary "Endless Summer" afternoon sessions. NW Tramontane is side-off — irregular and not recommended here; better options are Port Camargue or the coastal spots. Avoid N, NE, E in offshore conditions.
Official kite zone marked from Apr 15 to Oct 15 by buoys (to the left on arrival). Swimmers and beachgoers present in summer — stay within the designated zone. 2m height restriction for vehicle access. Offshore wind sectors (NW/N/NE) are dangerous — stay well clear of these. La Plage des Roquilles (adjacent) is forbidden for kitesurf in summer.
