Kabeljous Lagoon is the flat water spot of Jeffreys Bay, located north of town. This small lagoon offers calm and shallow conditions, perfect for beginners and kite lessons. It is the flat water alternative to J-Bay's wave spots. The lagoon is surrounded by dunes and vegetation. It works as a teaching spot and for freestyle. This is where most J-Bay kite schools give their lessons.
The spot works with SE, E and W wind. Permanent flat water as the lagoon is sheltered from ocean swell. Water level can vary with seasons and rainfall. Ideal for kite lessons, freestyle and foiling. Riding possible on a moderate surface area. Best from October to March with the SE thermal.
Open all year round
Beginner
Flat water in the lagoon. Sandy bottom, shallow (0.3-1.5 metres). Warm water, warmer than the ocean. No waves. Light chop in strong wind. Shorty wetsuit or lycra in summer, 3/2 in winter. Perfect for learning and freestyle.
Parking by the lagoon, access from the road north of J-Bay. Small unpaved parking. Kite schools set up by the lagoon in season. Some basic facilities. J-Bay centre 5-10 minutes by car.
Southeast wind channels towards the lagoon and works well. East and ESE wind blows along the lagoon. Typical strength of 15-22 knots in summer. Wind can be slightly attenuated compared to the coast due to dune shelter. W/WNW wind works in the opposite direction.
Very few dangers. Shallow and sheltered flat water spot. Watch for very shallow areas and aquatic weeds. Wind can drop in areas sheltered by dunes. Limited lagoon size — space shared between kiters and students.
