Low Head is a kitesurfing spot located on the north coast of Tasmania, at the mouth of the Tamar River. This historic headland with its iconic lighthouse offers interesting sailing conditions at the junction between the river and Bass Strait. The dominant wind comes from the west to northwest in summer. Currents at the Tamar mouth can be strong and unpredictable. Waves are moderate. The bottom is a mix of sand and rock. The best season is from November to March. The spot is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders due to the currents. The water is cold, thick wetsuit required. Watch out for tidal currents at the mouth. Low Head has a campground and basic amenities.
