Alikes Ancient Pidna is a spot on the western coast of the Thermaikos Gulf, in the Pieria region, near the archaeological site of ancient Pidna (location of the famous battle of 168 BC). Facing east towards the gulf, this spot benefits from the Vardaris (N/NNW) arriving from the Vardar valley in side-shore, as well as east/northeasterly winds crossing the gulf. The name "Alikes" refers to the ancient salt pans of the area, offering shallow areas and flat water.
Launch from sandy beaches or the edges of the former salt pans. In Vardaris (N/NNW), the wind is side-shore — riding along the coast. In east/NE wind, onshore to side-onshore conditions. The shallow areas of the former salt pans offer very flat and shallow water — ideal for freestyle and learning. Beyond, the gulf offers more depth and fetch.
Very flat water in the shallows and former salt pan areas. Moderate chop in the open gulf in NE/E onshore wind. The east-west gulf fetch (20+ km) can generate chop in strong wind. Shallow depth (50 cm to 1 m) in salt pan areas, progressive in the gulf.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access from the Pieria coastal road (old national road). Parking along the road or on paths leading to the former salt pans. Relatively easy access area.
Potentially very powerful Vardaris — assess your skills. Muddy bottom in salt pan areas can trap feet. Murky water in places making obstacles invisible. Some debris or stakes in former salt pan areas. Archaeological site nearby — respect protected zones.
The Vardaris (N/NNW) is the main wind, arriving from the Vardar valley in side-shore on this east-facing coast. East and northeasterly winds cross the gulf and arrive onshore to side-onshore. The Pieria coast also benefits from thermals generated by the heating of Mount Olympus slopes to the southwest. The former salt pans offer protected areas with very flat water. Consistent and reliable wind, particularly from spring to autumn.
