La Mercy Lagoon is one of KwaZulu-Natal's most popular flat-water kite spots, located at the Mdloti River mouth near King Shaka Airport. This lagoon offers ideal conditions for beginners and learning with flat, shallow, warm water (22-26°C). It's an essential spot in the Durban kite scene.
The spot works in NE to E winds. The lagoon offers flat, shallow water, ideal for learning. Water level varies with rainfall and river mouth opening. In strong wind, small chop forms. Spacious launch zone on the lagoon beach.
Flat, warm water (22-26°C). Sandy, shallow bottom (0.5 to 1.5 m). No waves. No currents in normal conditions. Fresh to brackish water. Ideal conditions for learning kite and wingfoil.

Access from the N2 or the coastal road north of Durban, near King Shaka Airport. Parking at the lagoon edge. Some shops and restaurants nearby. Kite schools on site.
Few dangers in the lagoon. Be cautious if the river mouth is open to the sea (currents). Hippos occasionally reported in the lagoon (rare but check with locals). Power lines in some nearby areas. Solo sailing not recommended.
The dominant wind is the NE (summer trade wind), which blows directly onto the lagoon. This thermal wind strengthens in the afternoon and offers reliable 15-25 knot sessions. The lagoon is well exposed to NE wind. Rideable year-round, best October to April.
