Knysna Lagoon (Brenton on Lake side) is one of the most renowned flat water spots on the Garden Route. This vast lagoon, framed by the impressive Knysna Heads, offers a protected water body ideal for beginners and freestyle practice. The Brenton on Lake side is the main riding area, with vast stretches of shallow flat water. The lagoon is tidal — water level varies considerably between high and low tide. It is a must-ride spot on the Garden Route.
The spot works with SE, E and W wind channelled across the lagoon. Flat water is excellent at high tide when the lagoon is full. At low tide, vast areas become too shallow — check tide times before riding. Mid-rising to high tide is the optimal window. The lagoon offers immense space to ride safely. Ideal for learning and freestyle.
Exceptional flat water at high tide. Sandy and muddy bottom, variable depth from 0.3 to 4 metres depending on tide and area. No waves in the lagoon. Light chop in strong wind. Brackish water, warmer than the ocean (18-23°C). Shorty wetsuit or lycra in summer, 3/2 in winter. Sandbanks emerge at low tide.

Parking at Brenton on Lake, accessible from the N2 via Knysna then towards Brenton. Parking by the lagoon, free. Well-identified launch area. Easy access to the water. Some basic facilities nearby. Knysna with all its shops and restaurants is 10-15 minutes away.
Few dangers at this flat water spot. Watch for sandbanks and very shallow areas at low tide — risk of foot injury and gear damage (foil). Strong currents in the main channel and near the Heads entrance — avoid this area. Sharks sometimes present in the lagoon (bull sharks). Do not approach the Knysna Heads while riding.
Southeast wind channels between the Knysna Heads and blows across the lagoon in side-shore. The SE thermal is reliable in summer (October-March), reaching 15-22 knots in the afternoon. East and ESE wind blows along the lagoon. West wind blows in the opposite direction along the lagoon. The Heads create a Venturi effect that can accelerate wind at the lagoon entrance.
