Akaiwatosen is a freshwater kitesurfing spot located on the banks of the Tone River in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo. This river spot offers a flat body of water ideal for learning and freestyle, in a rural setting surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. The dominant wind comes from the northwest in winter, channelled through the Tone River valley from the Gunma mountains. In summer, southeast thermal breezes travel up the valley in the late afternoon. The river body of water is flat and shallow, perfect for beginners. This freshwater spot is not affected by tides. Access is via the riverbanks with parking available. Be aware that water levels can vary depending on rainfall and upstream dam releases.
