Desert Point is one of the flagship spots of Lago di Lesina, the large lagoon of Gargano in northern Puglia. This 22 km long lagoon offers a flat and shallow body of water, perfect for learning and freestyle. The name "Desert Point" comes from the desert-like atmosphere of the lagoon's sandy shores. Lago di Lesina is considered the "Lo Stagnone of Puglia": flat water, shallow (50 cm to 1 m), sandy bottom, and regular thermal wind in summer. It is one of the best spots in Italy for learning kitesurfing.
The lagoon works with several wind directions. The Maestrale (NW) and Tramontana (N) are the most frequent in summer. The elongated shape of the lagoon creates sufficient fetch to sail comfortably in most wind directions.
Open all year round
Beginner
Ultra-flat body of water, depth 50 cm to 1 m. Sandy bottom. Brackish and warm water in summer. Ideal conditions for freestyle and learning. No significant waves or chop.
Free parking on the dirt roads leading to the lagoon. Access via secondary roads from Lesina or Torre Mileto. Kite schools often organize transport from their base.
The prevailing wind in summer is the Maestrale (NW) with a thermal component in the afternoon. The Sirocco (SE) and Libeccio (SW) are also frequent. The thermal wind sets in early afternoon and blows consistently between 12 and 22 knots.
The lagoon is very safe thanks to its shallow depth. You can stand everywhere. Watch out for sharp shells on the bottom in some areas. Intense heat in summer, bring sunscreen and water. A few fishing stakes in the lagoon.
