Moonlight Bay is a bay on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, located a few kilometers north of Gimli. The bay offers some natural protection while remaining exposed to the prevailing east winds that cross the lake over more than 60 km of fetch. The spot is appreciated for its consistent summer conditions and sandy beach. Gimli, the main kitesurfing hub on Lake Winnipeg, is nearby with its services and historic Icelandic atmosphere.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Partially protected freshwater bay. Moderate to strong chop depending on east wind intensity. Waves can reach 1 m+ in sustained winds. Progressive sandy bottom. The bay's shape can create calmer areas near shore, ideal for progression.
Frequent violent summer thunderstorms on Lake Winnipeg — monitor weather constantly. Cold water (wetsuit needed except midsummer). Bottom can become rocky in places. Thermal winds can add to synoptic winds in the afternoon.
