Spot de Somo Beach

Somo Beach

Somo Beach

Overview

Somo Beach is the main kitesurf spot in Cantabria and one of the busiest in northern Spain. Wide sandy beach facing north, across the bay from Santander. Dozens of kiters on good days, great atmosphere. Multiple schools (Northwind, Kung Fu Kite, Latas) and surf camps. The beach stretches from Somo to Loredo to the west.

The main spot is at the entrance to Santander Bay — you must respect the shipping channel for cargo ships and ferries. At low tide, the remains of a sunken ship appear in front of the Northwind school access — not dangerous except at mid-tide when it gets submerged.

Wind specificities

NE (Anticyclonic) — Spring/summer. THE characteristic wind. Side-on, stable 12-17 knots. +3-5 knots thermal boost in summer. Sunny clear days.
E — Spring. Side-shore, stable. Loredo shadow for 100-200m then stable. Venturi effect near El Puntal with Santander.
NW (Gallego) — Autumn/winter. Side-on, GUSTY. 12-40 knots depending on depression. With swell. Towards Loredo = cleaner.
W (Gallego) — Autumn/winter. Side-shore to side-off. Stable, 12-40 knots. If 1-1.5m waves at mid to high tide = luxury spot, side-off clean walls.
N — Winter. Onshore, gusty and strong. Rare. Cold, showers.
SW (Surada) — OFFSHORE, VERY DANGEROUS. Alternative: Pedreña or Los Peligros.

Hazards

⚠️ Shipping channel at bay entrance — cargo ships and ferries, never kite in the marked channel.
⚠️ Submerged shipwreck in front of Northwind access — visible at low tide, trap at mid-tide when submerged.
⚠️ SW wind (Surada) = VERY DANGEROUS, offshore — one mistake = rescue needed.
⚠️ Near El Puntal (west), Santander city blocks wind creating very gusty conditions. Towards Loredo, wind is cleaner.
⚠️ Loredo area creates a wind shadow of 100-200m with NE — once past, wind is stable.
